The First Meeting
I begin by meeting with you in my studio or your location to discuss what you
want to convey in the portrait and particular elements such as:
Pose, attitude, expression
Size
Dress
Lighting
Your own ideas and more
During the first meeting or at a second session, I develop references
from digital, photographic and sketch sources for later use in my studio stage of work. I prefer to work with photographs
I have taken, as a portrait is really an expression of the interaction between a painter and the sitter. The sitter may bring
a variety of attires, as much time is spent exploring various combinations of poses, lighting and background. We will end
with a sense of the overall design, color scheme and pose that will be used.
From these reference photos, we will decide together on the look of the final painting.
We review the photos together, weither in person or by telephone, and make choices about the final composition and details.
Once this is decided, we will take quality photos of this composition and photos of every important detail as referene for
the painting. Upon signing a contract at one of our preliminary meetings, a deposit of fifty percent of the total price is
required.
Painting in the Studio
Next I move into the studio to complete the majority of the painting from further sittings,
sketches and other references. If possible I would encourage the client or subject to be available for a live sitting.
Scheduled visits to my studio for "progress viewings" are welcome, especially midway through
the painting. Generally, portrait paintings are completed within 1-3 months depanding on the size; typically shorter periods
of time for drawings.
The Completed Painting
Finally we will view the completed painting together. At this time the final payment is
due. If you desire, I will make any minor adjustments or changes. I strive to capture not only an excellent likeness but also
the impression and spirit you wish to convey.
